How a potato year usually runs

General background for temperate regions, not this farm's dates. Timing shifts with local climate, weather and variety.

  1. Planting

Seed potatoes usually go in during spring, once the soil has warmed and the risk of hard frost has eased.

  2. Growth and flowering

Through early summer the plants fill out, and soil is often drawn up around the stems into ridges. Many varieties flower in this stretch.

  3. Early potatoes

Some crops are lifted young, in early to mid summer, while the skins are still thin.

  4. Main harvest and storage

Main crops are usually lifted from late summer into autumn, after the tops die back and the skins firm up. Stored potatoes are kept cool and dark.
